Plot 14 – Strippoli / Stevens – Spring 2012

February 25, 2012

Spring is here!

But it almost feels like summer already…. Welcome to Texas I suppose. This year, spring 2012 is our second growing season in our plot. Fall was a good practice run, but now we are ready to get serious! We are using a modified version of Square Foot Gardening right now and this is our first year experimenting with companion planting. We are using some flowers to hopefully attract beneficial insects like bees, lady bugs, and lace wings and also using mint and marigolds to hopefully repel some of the bad ones. Now if only we could figure out how to chase off the fire ants…. Suggestions are welcome.

We’ve really packed it in this spring and can’t wait to see how it all goes! Right now we are growing:

  • Red Cabbage
  • Brussel Sprouts
  • Onions
    • Flat of Italy
    • Bunching
  • Broccoli – De Cicco
  • Potatoes
    • Yukon Gold
    • French Fingerling
  • Beets – Cylindra
  • Spinach
  • Sugar Snap Peas
  • Cauliflower – Veronica
  • Parsnips
  • Kale – Lacinato (Dinosaur)
  • Radish – Easter Egg
  • Lettuce

    • Mild Mesclun Mix
    • Spicy Mesclun Mix
    • Freckles Romaine
  • Carrot
    • Red Dragon
    • Cosmic Purple
    • Nantes
  • Flowers
    • Alyssum
    • Verbena
  • Garlic
  • Herbs
    • Mint
    • Chives
    • Oregano
    • Parsley
    • Cilantro
    • Tarragon
    • Thyme
    • Sage
  • Wheat Grass
  • Strawberries – Allstar

I think that is all we have going on so far. Summer will of course bring changes to what we are growing.

We like to mix it up a bit with our fertilizers. We mainly use fish emulsion, Garret Juice, apple cider vinegar, molasses (liquid and dried), dried alfalfa, bone meal, seaweed, compost, and worm castings. This year we really hope to kick it up a notch or seven with lots of compost and worm castings. We’ve finally got a really good population of worms now in the vermiposting system and we are expanding our home composting efforts. *fingers crossed*
